Our saddle trees are designed to distribute the rider's weight over the horse's back, making your saddle comfortable for your horse.

Saddle Terminology
1. The two bars that run parallel
2. The swell that holds the bars together at the front
3. The cantle that holds the bars together in the back

5. The gullet

The Bars of the saddle tree are what is in contact with the horse and are the actual weight-bearing surface of the saddle. A good fitting western saddle will apply only 3/4 lbs per square inch to the horse's back with a 150 lb rider up. An English saddle, which has far less surface area, will apply about 1 3/4 lbs per square inch with the same rider up. For this reason western saddles far easier on the horse despite their greater weight.

To distribute weight evenly, the entire length of the bars must be in even contact with the horse's back. The channel between the bars must be wide enough to keep pressure off the spine. And, the gullet height and width must be sufficient to keep pressure off the withers and shoulders.

The Swell (also called the fork)
The saddle swell is the front of the saddle tree. It holds the two parallel bars together and provides a base for mounting the horn. A swell is also commonly called the fork. The term “fork” came from the early practice of making this part of the saddle from the fork of a tree. The swell is what gives the shape to the front of the saddle. Our standard swell width is 13".

The Cantle (our standard is 4" tall and is also available in a high back that is 5" tall and also called the "High Back"

The Horn Our standard horn is 3/78" tall and is narrow to give you a good grip.

The Gullet: The cutout or tunnel underneath the fork is called the gullet. The open space created between the bars is called the gullet channel.
